Improved Hair colors & skin types
Until now, most home systems have been less than ideal for removing blond, grey, and red hair.
With the new Infinity, that changes. We’ve made significant improvements to the device’s color recognition technology bringing at-home pulsed light hair removal to the widest audience ever possible.
Gone are the limitations of the past. Welcome to a new world of seemingly endless possibilities in the realm of at-home laser hair removal with the Silk’n Infinity.
Improves your skin tone
The Silk’n Infinity is the first at-home laser hair removal device that actively opens the pores of your skin during treatments. This not only allows for better removal of stubborn hair—more on that later—it also lets you better moisturize afterward.
Some at-home devices can irritate your skin during treatments. But that’s not the case with the Infinity. At the most, all you should feel is a gentle tingling sensation. And that tingling is where the magic happens.
The science behind Infinity’s eHPL technology encourages your skin’s pores and follicles to open up. This allows for better absorption of your favorite after-treatment moisturizer. The results are astounding. The Infinity is the first device of its kind that actually improves your skin tone during the hair removal process.
Make the stubble, ingrown hairs, and skin irritation associated with other hair removal systems a thing of the past.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the technology that makes all this possible.
Combines two proven technologies for even better results
The Infinity combines two technologies to provide the based pulsed light hair removal system possible.
- HPL – The Infinity improves upon the game-changing pulsed light technology that made the Silk’n line of at-home laser hair removal devices so effective
- Galvanic energy – A gentle electrode on the device opens your pores for better light penetration and after-treatment skin care
Silk’n hair removal devices work by sending light energy down the hair shaft. This process heats the hair’s root and damages the follicle, preventing future growth. When the galvanic plate opens up your pores, this allows the light to penetrate deeper into the follicle. Those stubborn hairs that used to be such a problem will soon be a distant memory.
Even better, your pores will remain opened up long enough for you to do your after-treatment moisturizing routine. This will let you care for your skin better as your moisturizer penetrates deeper. You’ll rehydrate better than ever before, locking in moisture for optimal absorption. Finally, a laser hair removal treatment that leaves your skin smoother—and rejuvenated.
One and done—no refills required
You’ll never need to purchase a refill cartridge for the Infinity. The product ships with enough pulses to give you a lifetime of full-body treatments.
Not only is the device way more affordable than some professional spa treatments, but it’s a single payment. You won’t have to purchase anything else for any reason. Ever.
Two operation modes for more effective results
You can use the Infinity two ways: pulsing and gliding.
Pulsing is ideal for small patches. Spot treatments. This is the recommended way to work on the upper lip, or for isolated spots.
When working in pulse mode, work in rows going across or down the treatment area. After each pulse, move the device to a new area. Repeat until you’ve finished. Avoid overlaps and gaps.
Gliding works best for larger areas. Legs. Upper arms. That sort of thing.
At Home Laser Hair Removal Reviews
- Laser hair removal is typically performed by a professional, but at-home IPL devices exist.
- The SmoothSkin Bare+ is a handheld IPL hair-removal device that’s FDA-approved.
- One editor tested how well the device worked on her armpits compared to pro treatments.
I shave my armpits just about every other day in the shower. It’s not something I absolutely loathe doing, but I don’t exactly enjoy the activity, either. If given the option to just snap my fingers and pouf, I’d be able to rid myself of body hair for good, I totally would — that’s just my personal preference. I’ve tried a few different methods of hair removal aside from shaving, like waxing, but I couldn’t commit to the rigorous schedule that it requires. On the other hand, I’ve gotten laser hair removal on my bikini line and preferred that above all other forms of body-hair removal. The only problem: professional laser hair removal isn’t the most accessible beauty treatment because of its price. I never even considered being able to do laser at home until I learned about the SmoothSkin Bare+ ($279), a newly FDA-approved at-home IPL hair-removal device.
SmoothSkin has been in the at-home laser hair-removal business for a while, but it just expanded to the US market. Its products are clinically proven and safe for at-home use. Honestly, I was skeptical at first that it would work. Having had very successful laser hair removal done at a spa in the past, I wasn’t sure it would yield the same hairless results.
The SmoothSkin Bare+ is a small, handheld device just larger than my palm. It uses 100 IPL — which stands for intense pulsed light — flashes per minute to target body hair, reducing its growth over time to reveal smooth skin. (Technically speaking, IPL is not the same as a laser treatment, which uses single-spectrum light to emit a specific wavelength.)
It’s cleared for use on the whole body — underarms, legs, bikini line, and even face — and all you have to do is press a single button to activate it, so it’s super simple to use. The directions advise to use it on clean skin and that all visible hair should be removed through shaving prior to treating the area — this is very different from professional laser hair removal, which requires there to be short, visible stubble on the area. Once you plug it in, the device automatically powers on, and you’re ready to go. To use it, you lightly press it against the area you want to treat and press the button. The device has a smart sensor and only allows you to activate the IPL if it registers a compatible surface and skin tone, which is made clear by the button turning from red to blue. Even if you press the button without the device giving you the OK, it won’t work.
The first time I went to use the SmoothSkin Bare+, I was a little nervous — probably more nervous than I was to get professional laser hair removal. Even though the directions sounded pretty straightforward, I was afraid I’d mess it up or that it would hurt. I finally mustered up the courage to use it for the first time one night and was pleasantly surprised. I positioned the device against my armpit and, once the button turned blue, clicked. A burst of white light — nothing too powerful or dangerous that you need goggles — flashed against my skin, and I felt a slight warm, tingling feeling. It was nothing compared to the laser treatment I got at the salon. With the first pass done, I felt confident to continue treating my entire underarm and moving on to the other side.
The device treats an area of skin that’s about an inch by two centimeters big at a time, so it required multiple passes to finish my armpit. I wouldn’t describe the feeling it leaves as painful, although obviously, pain is subjective — it just feels warm. Afterward, my skin looked a little bit pink, but it was barely noticeable, and there was no lingering pain.
There are a few limits to the device — as with all lasers, you need to check that it’s compatible with your skin tone and that it won’t cause any irritation (the brand strongly recommends a patch test, and I second that). It also doesn’t work on all hair colors (a common problem with all types of IPL hair removal) because the device can’t register the super-light pigment of blond hair, so it works best for dark hair.
Still, I’ve been using the SmoothSkin Bare+ once a week for about one and a half months, and although I still do get some hair growth that requires me to shave, I’ve noticed a difference in how much and how thick it is. After about five weeks, my armpit hair started to grow in thinner, and I plan on keeping up with the treatments to see how much more progress I can make (in addition to testing it out on other areas of my body, as well). Considering treating both of my underarms takes me less than five minutes, it’s not hard to fit into my routine.
So, is it as effective as professional-grade laser hair removal? No, but considering it’s priced under $300 and you can treat your entire body with it, I think it’s well worth the splurge.
Best At Home Laser Hair Removal For Blonde Hair
Laser hair removal is an increasingly popular means of removing unwanted body hair as the treatment systematically damages the hair until it stops growing altogether.
In the past, this cosmetic treatment was considered safe and effective only for people with a noticeable difference in their skin and hair tones. It was notoriously ineffective in removing blonde hair. The good news for people with fair hair is that things have changed.
This article looks at the advancements in laser hair removal technology and explains how even people with blonde hair can benefit from the treatment today.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work on Blonde Hair?
Laser hair removal is a cosmetic treatment that involves the use of a laser device that heats and damages the targeted hair follicles. The goal of laser hair removal is long-term or permanent hair growth inhibition.
The success of the treatment depends on several factors:
1. Type of hair in the area you want to treat.
There are two types of hair on our skin: vellus and terminal hair. Vellus hair is the short, light-colored, barely visible hair covering our entire bodies except for the skin on our palms and feet.
Terminal hair is the thicker, longer hair that grows on our legs, arms, underarms, belly, and bikini area.
Laser hair removal is ineffective for vellus hair because it is only lightly pigmented. The treatment has a higher chance of success on terminal hair, which contains higher concentrations of melanin.
2. The contrast between your skin and hair tone.
Melanin is found both in skin and hair. Traditional laser removal devices require a pronounced contrast between the skin and hair color in order to be able to target only the pigment in the hair. If both the hair and skin are dark or fair, the laser could mistakenly heat and damage the skin.
3. The laser device model used for the treatment.
Today, laser technology has advanced, and some laser devices can target the pigment present in lighter, softer hair. Such lasers use a longer laser energy wavelength from traditional lasers, which helps to attract lightly pigmented hair. Examples of this technology include diode and Nd:YAG lasers.
Laser Hair Removal for Blonde Hair: Options
If you have blonde hair that you want to remove with a laser, consider the following options.
1. Dye the Hair
Some patients believe that dying their hair a darker color helps attract the laser. This tactic may help in some cases, but dye usually doesn’t penetrate deeper into the follicle, which is where the laser targets the pigment.
However, some lasers have this step incorporated into the device’s mechanism. The device artificially pigments the targeted hair all the way into the follicle before delivering laser energy to the area.
2. Long Pulses
Laser devices with long pulses are proven to be successful at removing blonde hair. They are also safer than traditional lasers with shorter wavelengths.
Here’s why long-pulsed lasers may be the future of laser hair removal:
- Deeper Penetration. Lasers with longer wavelengths penetrate deeper than short-pulsed lasers, bypassing the skin’s surface. They aim directly at the follicle, preventing the possibility of damaging the skin in fair-skinned and light-haired patients.
- Less Need for a Strong Pigmentation. As stated above, long-pulsed lasers aim straight at the follicle, bypassing the skin, so there is no need for a significant contrast between the skin and hair tone.
- Increased Cooling Time. Longer pulses provide a longer cooling period between each pulse. This makes the procedure gentler and safer for the patient.
The Results
Laser hair removal requires several treatments. Patients usually notice slower hair growth and weaker hair a few weeks after the first or second treatment.
The number of treatments depends on the patient’s skin and hair tones, the medical provider’s expertise, the laser device used, and the hair growth cycle.
The hair growth cycle has three phases:
- Anagen. In this phase, the hair is active and growing.
- Catagen. In this phase, hair growth is inhibited.
- Telogen. The hair rests.
The laser hair removal treatment is effective only during the anagen phase. However, as little as 20% of all hair is in the anagen phase at any given moment. Therefore, the patient needs to undergo a series of treatments spaced some time apart until the laser has worked on all the hair at the right moment.
For best results, laser hair removal experts recommend treatments every six weeks for the first several treatments and then longer intervals between sessions.
Patients usually require six to ten treatments for desired results, followed by maintenance sessions once or twice a year.
Potential Risks and Side Effects
Laser hair removal is considered a safe procedure for most candidates. Doctors recommend that women postpone their laser hair treatment during pregnancy.
The side effects after laser hair removal are rare and mild. They include redness, swelling, and itchiness.
Severe side effects are very rare and include scarring, blistering, skin discoloration, and increased hair growth. If you experience these symptoms, contact your medical provider.
