Hello, I have been following your blog for a while now and have seen a lot of posts about breast lift recovery but none about the incision not healing. I am having this problem and it is really starting to get me down. I am using bio oil on the site of the incision but it still is not healing. What do you recommend?
I had a breast lift and augmentation with silicone implants about five years ago. It was done by an excellent surgeon. I am very happy with my results, but one area has not healed well: the incision under my breasts on the sides of my chest.
The incision has a large lump and is still red and painful. It bleeds easily, even when I’m just putting on lotion or doing very light housework.
I’m wondering if this could be something that happens after any surgery and if there is anything I can do to help it heal faster?
When you choose to undergo breast lift surgery, you want to know that the procedure will last for years to come. The incision (or scars) should heal quickly and leave no lasting marks on your body.
The incision site where the breast lift was done should heal in about three to four weeks. Most of the time, it heals without a problem.
If the incision site gets red and swollen or has pus coming out of it, contact your surgeon immediately. This could be an infection that needs treatment with antibiotics. You will also need to apply antibiotic ointment to the incision periodically until it has healed completely.
The recovery period after breast lift surgery is usually shorter than that of breast augmentation, with most women able to return to work in about two weeks. But it’s important to note that each person heals at his or her own pace.
After Breast Lift Surgery: What to Expect
You will probably stay in the hospital for one night following surgery. If you had general anesthesia, you may require an overnight stay in the hospital. If you had local anesthesia and sedation, it may be possible for you to go home after your procedure.
A compression vest or garment may be placed over your breasts immediately after surgery to minimize swelling. Your surgeon will also use surgical tape or steri-strips (adhesive strips) to close the incisions on your breasts and torso, which should fall off on their own within a few days. You may have IV fluids during your procedure; if so, they will be removed once you are able to take liquids by mouth again.
You can expect some pain and swelling after surgery; however, this should subside within a few days as long as you follow your doctor’s directions regarding resting and taking pain medication as prescribed by him or her before returning back home or going back.
How Long For Breast Lift Incisions To Heal
After a breast lift, you’ll have some discomfort, swelling and bruising. Your skin may feel tight. These effects get better over time and last about two weeks. If you had drains near the incisions, your healthcare team will remove them a few days after the procedure.
Breasts may lose elasticity and sag over time because of age, pregnancy and weight changes. Breast lift, or mastopexy, is surgery to lift, reshape and tighten them. It can also improve asymmetry and other imperfections. Breast lift can be combined with breast augmentation or reduction. Results are noticeable immediately, but there are risks.
There’s arguably no procedure that is growing in popularity as rapidly as the breast lift. With its ability to restore a perkier, more youthful figure, it’s no wonder more and more women each year are considering breast lift surgery. If you have started thinking about a breast lift, you have likely read about what kind of scarring to expect.
Many women know that they are unhappy with their breasts but aren’t sure whether they may benefit most from a breast augmentation, breast lift, or another procedure. While breast augmentation primarily aims to increase breast volume, breast lift surgery is designed to reshape the breasts and raise them to a more natural, youthful position. Ideal candidates for breast lift, or mastopexy, may have one or more of the following concerns.
During your initial consultation for breast enhancement in the Beverly Hills area, Dr. Salcedo will examine your breasts, discuss your specific concerns and goals, and recommend the most appropriate course of action for you. In many cases, a combination of a breast augmentation plus breast lift helps to produce the most dramatic transformations, particularly for women who are looking to reverse the side effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding.
How is breast lift performed?
Breast lift surgery, which is performed using general anesthesia and typically takes about 2 – 3 hours to complete, involves one or more incisions on the breast. The exact placement and type of incision can vary depending on the nature and severity of the patient’s concerns, though most patients require either an inverted-T or anchor incision, both of which include a vertical incision down the center of the lower half of the breast. Dr. Salcedo will then reshape the breast tissue, remove excess skin, lift the breasts, and tighten the remaining skin for a stunning, youthful new look. The nipple-areola complex may also need to be moved to a more natural position over the center of the breast mound.
When will breast lift incisions be fully healed?
Your breast lift incisions should begin to close and heal within the first 1 – 2 weeks after surgery, during which time it is important to keep the area clean and not submerge the incisions. Once they have fully closed, the scar should begin to fade from red to pink and ultimately to flesh or white tone.
How Long After Breast Lift Can I Drive
Once a patient has undergone breast surgery, it’s important that they allow their body time to heal, so that can mean avoiding certain chores and activities for a little while – including driving.
How long will it take before a recovering breast surgery patient can drive again?
For the vast majority of patients, they generally feel as though they can begin to drive again around one or two weeks after their breast surgery procedure, though some patients may feel as though they need to wait several weeks – or would even prefer to wait several weeks.
With that said, only your cosmetic surgeon and healthcare team can provide you with a reasonably accurate timeframe. It may also be worth checking your car insurance in case there is clause that restricts you from being adequately insured for a certain amount of time following invasive surgery.
Some patients even feel ready to drive again within 5 to 7 days, but you really should discuss things with your surgeon before doing so.
More strenuous activities like exercise tend to require much more recovery time following any type of breast surgery before they are attempted, so in that regard a return to driving typically happens a lot sooner than other things.
Why can’t I drive for a while after breast surgery?
Aside from the obvious discomfort patients experience during the immediate days and possibly weeks following the procedure, patients will also likely require pain medication.
Furthermore, during the early recovery period the body will have reduced movement due to the pain, swelling, and stitches around the breast area. Just putting the seatbelt on would prove awkward and comfortable until the pain has subsided, and some mobility has returned.
It goes without saying that trying to drive without full ease of movement is incredibly dangerous and will severely restrict a driver from being able to adapt to any road situation without being distracted by the pain and discomfort.
